Who We Are

Wherever you are on your spiritual journey, you are welcome here.

It's about relationships.

Not just any kind of relationships, though.

Growing, healthy, life-giving relationships with God, with one another, and with the world.

First United Methodist Church is a congregation that welcomes all people, regardless of age, race, education, economic status, nationality, sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression, or special needs. We embrace this inclusive vision as our call to embody Christ in the city and to extend Christ’s ministry of reconciliation to all. We commit ourselves to welcome, respect, and love all who come among us.

Come help create the community you’ve been longing for and help transform the world with compassion, justice, and hope.

LGBTQ RECONCILING

First UMC welcomes and celebrates the diversity of God’s creation by creating a community of faith where lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer individuals and families find affirmation, support, and encouragement. Our congregation is a member of the Reconciling Ministries Network of United Methodists, who are working for the full equality and inclusion of all people in the life of the UMC.

First UMC is connected with other Reconciling United Methodists nearby through the Pacific Northwest Reconciling Ministries Network.

Newcomers are always invited to join in this work!

OUR PASTOR

Rev. Sharon Moe

Tacoma First United Methodist Church welcomes the Rev. Sharon L. Moe as its new pastor. Rev. Moe is recently retired (2017), and has accepted this appointment to Tacoma First for one year. Formerly Sharon has served several congregations in the PNW Conference, most recently Seattle First UMC. Prior to that appointment, Sharon served for seven years on the Cabinet of the PNWUMC, and in service to the Tacoma District. Rev. Moe is passionately committed to social justice and especially to those who are marginalized from the mainstream communities, including the church. She has worked to make place in the UMC for LGBTQIA+ persons and to open the Church to full inclusion of marginalized, vulnerable, threatened and isolated persons. Her appointment to Tacoma First UMC brings her joy ! And she looks forward to meeting all in the congregation and folks who are new to the church as well.

Among her many life experiences Sharon has worked for many years for peace and well-being in the middle East (Israel, the West Bank, Jordan, Iraq, and Syria). She has traveled to and worked in Africa, in the Philippines, and in Romania (Transylvania). She brings with her to Tacoma First the heartfelt desire for the health and well-being of this congregation, now and into the future, as it ministers in the City.
